Hey everyone, I've got a 2 liter 2001 Saab 9-3 here. A couple weeks ago I started getting intermittent 'coolant low' messages on my car computer, but I wasn't sure if the coolant was any lower than the last time it was filled (due to a water pump replacement). This past weekend I drove 200 miles home, where the oil was changed -- my dad drained it and didn't note that it looked at all unusual.
I drive 200 miles back here and yesterday I get the low coolant warning again. I investigate and it looks like it might be a little lower than the previous week, but with temperature fluctuations I am not sure. However, I checked the dipstick, which was very yellowed and gunky. I've seen something like this before, well over a year ago, and we chalked it up to water from the environment -- but now it looks like it is worse, and since we just changed the oil, it is very suspicious. The weather has been very, very wet, but it seems like too much too quickly.
So, I got an estimate for a headgasket relacement ($1600+ at the only local place that will do it, a Saab/Volvo dealer), but they suggested it could be a number of other issues. My friend, who is a mechanic but not intimately familiar with Saabs, seems to think that a blown headgasket is the only thing that would cause coolant to leak into the oil.
Did I mention that, so far, it's running fine? I don't plan on driving it any more just in case, but isn't that strange if the headgasket is blown?
Thanks for any tips or suggestions!
