I don't mind that there are differing opinions. But here's my rationale; We live close to the mountains and frequent them alot for biking, skiing, hiking, etc. So lots of miles with no services and no tow trucks. If being stranded somewhere, and having to be towed somewhere is going to cost me at least a hundred bucks, plus possibly acccomodation, and paying someone to install the new cable because I don't have the tools with me, then yes, it's really easy to rationalise this. (And add-in an irate wife!)
It all depends on how long one intends to keep their saab. At 10 years old, I replaced all the suspension parts, clutch, upgraded to hydraulic clutch, SS exhaust, engine/tranny mounts, engine seals, water pump, pulleys, hoses, thermostat, etc., biting the bullet and doing all this work at one time so that I wouldn't have to worry about them again for the next ten years (which is how long I plan to keep the car).
So if anyone is happy living with the knowledge that the clutch cable can break unexpectedly (I certainly wouldn't want to be stranded in -30C weather on a winter's night), then that's their choice. I just said that I found it was worth the effort and peace of mind. We have an saying in I.T.... you can pay me now or you can pay me later. I chose the former because the latter can end up costing alot more in time and money.
