Thread damage due to seizing and dirt falling into to the open cylinders are the big concerns.
I always give the head a blast of compressed air before loosening the plugs and then repeat after loosening a few threads to insure nothing makes it's way into the cylinders. You'd be surprised how much sand ends up in there. If the plugs have not been removed in a long time I would give them a shot of Liquid Wrench or PB Blaster after the first air wash.
It's a good idea to at least coat the threads of the plugs with some oil prior to installing to ensure that they do not seize in the aluminum. I've used high temp nickel based anti-seize too but have heard debates on whether this is actually good. Never hurt my old SPG in 16 years.
