Sprocket timing mark a weensy bit off Posted by crawdad [Email] (#1867) [Profile/Gallery] (more from crawdad) on Sun, 14 Mar 2010 20:15:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This is the exhaust-side cam. The intake-side cam is about 1/16" more towards the firewall. Is that ok? I'm exhausted trying to get this right and no, I'm not revealing how long I've worked on this. If I start off with all timing marks where they should be, I always get a bit of slack chain between the sprockets. Trying to correct that by turning the cam and getting the tensioner to take up the slack misaligns the timing marks on that cam. So I try to compensate for that by first turning the cam a little before its proper mark and hope it lines up later after the cam is turned. But sometimes when I do that, and put the chain back on, it fits just right and there is no slack, but then I can't correct the timing mark by taking up the slack! I've tried moving the sprocket one tooth at a time under the chain without the tensioner installed, but I can't get it to move. Chain lifts a little but not enough to clear a tooth. Actually, I don't think the timing is off by even a tooth.
Please lead me out of this Twilight Zone.
Thanks.
