If you remember I've got a '95 turbo convertible, 152,000 miles, with body damage from a rear end collision and I've been looking for a car to drop the engine into. Paid $500. It is very drivable, never seen salt and the top works, but it rides like everything will soon fall off every time I hit a bump.
I'm looking at a '97 turbo, 160,000 miles, that needs a tranny (asking $1,000) and my thought is/was to drop in the engine and tranny as one into the '97. But...
I've been studying Demitry's photos and instructions and I've got some questions. All in terms of rebuilding the engine or not—or part of it. My original thought was to just drop it straight in without replacing anything. But I thought the collective group would be able to give me some insight into making a decision.
1. Is there a minimum amount of work I should consider given that the engine will be out of the car?
2. What is the suggested work I should do?
3. How much swapping back and forth is there between the '95 & '97 engines and trannys is there?
I'd prefer not to get into the pistons but I would consider the chains. I should have all the tools needed and I'm getting pretty decent at working on my 900 S, but nothing of this magnitude. I figure I at least have a second engine to work with.
I think the clutch on the '95 is newer but not so much on the '97. The tranny on the '95 seems tighter than my '96 with 25,000 fewer miles.
-If I had never gotten a Saab with a turbo I would never be in this situation. It is hard to get back into my S and not feel the kick of the turbo.
