My 99 9-3 5-dr (221K miles) was hit smack into the rear door at highway speeds. The door did its job and the door still latches (window was not broken) and it does not look like the hinges were bent.
Insurance totaled my car (because it has a lot of miles and the estimate was $3000K to put on a new door, replace the bumper cover and the window behind the door). They offered me $2600 to take it off my hands or $2300 if I want to keep it. I have driven it to work for the last 2 weeks with no ill effects noticed. For the $300, I am going to take a shot at keeping it. I can get a rear door for $170 locally (its dark blue and my car is black, but I don't really care at this point).
I need to replace the door because my 13 mo old girl sits on the other side of it in my car (not when I was hit, Thank God). It looks like the hinge/door attachment is just two large hex head bolts.
The wiring comes in from the bottom, is there a wiring harness somewhere under the seat or is it hard wired? I would like a working door lock, but windows are a non issue, since my little girls "shade" is always stuck to the window.
Could I splice them if I had too?
Also, there is a closer with a detent on it that holds the door open. Not a necessity, but how does this attach/detach?
Any help would be appreciated. I will likely pick up my door this week sometime (in the hatch of my 9-3 ;-). It would be great if this did not turn into a major project.
Thanks in advance. I have been eyeing up 2006 and up 9-5 SW's in case this car dies, and having this site to help is a big part of my reason to do so.
