Here are my observations on the new Empi axles I had delivered recently. The boots on them are rubber, so I wanted to swop them for better quality boots. Normally when I do a boot change, I take off the snap ring holding the tripod bearing in place. Then, using a 3 armed puller, pull the tripod bearing off, and slide both boots off the axle, replace and reassemble. (this avoids having to take the cv joint off.)
I tried to do the same with the EMPI axles, and the tripod bearing would not come off. Nor was there any snapring to secure the tripod bearing. It is cleverly constructed that the tripod bearing is NOT removeable (the securing rings are "immersed" on the shaft and covered by the tripod bearing, with the lip of the tripod bearing preventing removal). I suspect the CV joint is similarly attached. I guess they aren't kidding when they say that the axles are designed for single use only (and therefore not rebuild/remachineable). I'm just wondering how long they will last. (they said on the box that they were made in China).
