Electronic devices, even if they are solid state like this one, you should never use water on -
once the outside plastic cover is taken off you can clean that in soapy warm water (make sure it is 100% dry before re-assembling though), but the switches inside and the contact plates should be hand cleaned with copper cleaner, contact cleaner, or anything that is specifically for electrical switches. I use a q-tip and some contact cleaner, and then some emery cloth to get rid of hard corrosion and arcing marks - then copper cleaner to give it a fresh surface for excellent contact.
Then they work perfectly (unless spilled on!)
