I assume you mean the electronic thingamajig below the key cylinder.
The shifter is the least of your problems. The manual does a very good job outlining the job. It is a pisser. An automatic is much easier. You can do a manual without disconnecting the shifter linkage but you have to use the "braille method."
The shifter and all connections are not really an issue. I did it about a year ago. I took a used one out of an automatic and put it into my manual. It was a chore, but maybe removing the linkage would have been quicker.
