You'd start by turning the handle on the top motor to disengage the hydraulics. You can then manually release the 5th bow locks and tonneau cover (using the tire iron as a lever), then you can lower the top by hand (sucker is heavy!). You can also raise the top, but you won't be able to lock the 5th bow down or the tonneau cover. It's really intended for an emergency situation because your fifth bow will be flapping in the breeze and not water tight anymore.
What's wrong with your top that it won't operate? Lot of times it is just a microswitch...
