A much easier way to repair the sharkfin

The sharkfin on 2002 and earlier 9-3’s (I can’t speak for later models) is one of the first trim items to deteriorate with time. The sharkfin is, in any case, strictly ornamental in this digital age of OnStar. There have been several posts on this site describing how to ease back the interior headliner to remove the old sharkfin, replacing the worn part with a new blank fin ($63!), and reattaching the headliner. I have a much simpler soution.
The exterior skin of the fin is of a low-quality rubberized material. This can easily be peeled off. What is left is a sharkfin-shaped, shiny-black metal piece, somewhat pockmarked in appearance. For a year I just left this residual piece in place. Recently, however, I detailed my 2002 9-3 SE. As part of the detail I taped off that portion of the roof. I applied Bondo Spot and Glaze Putty directly from the tube and filled in the indentations, leaving as smooth a surface as possible. After hardening the Bondo was smoothed with wire wool, painted with primer, and finished with Dupli-Color Trim Paint. The paint is a matt finish, perfect for all Saab black trim pieces.
Apart from drying times, my work didn’t exceed 30 minutes. I now have a ¾-size sharkfin which is otherwise indistinguishable from the original.
