I had a seepy power steering suction line (from the reservoir to the pump) that turned into a leaky one.
Dealership wanted 3 days and $186 for a new part. I believe in supporting SAAB, but the wait to too long. Besides I was throwing them some other business.
Did some digging and found some heavy duty teflon core hydraulic hose. the key is finding something that is vacuum rated to prevent the line from collapsing. I got some parker material, teflon with stainless steel and then rubber. Very nice stuff.
Too nice. After removing the line (what a mess!) I was unable to attach the new hose. Did not fit onto the plastic tip of the reservoir, and didn't want to mess with the same tip as pump. Angle was not good, very slippery, and there are little metal ends that can cut your hands. Probably my ugliest day of 18+ years of SAAB ownership.
I now understand why saab designed the part as a metal hose with soft rubber tips. Much easier to get on and off at tight angles.
The only good ending (so far) is after re-attaching the old line, the leaking (for now) as stopped. This is clearly a temporary measure -- the rubber on the reservoir side is not in good shape at all. However a bleeding later and no signs of leaks.
No moral to the story: just a bit of a warning to amateur DIYers. Has anyone had experience with used PS suction lines? I suspect, because of the tight bend, they will all seep.
parts site have the part for less, but it is a special order item.
