My 1999 9-3 5spd had been making a sudden thud when starting out. I thought this was my rack pinion that I know was going out and had play. Much to my delight this morning on heading to the gym all of a sudden a much louder thud and I suddenly lost the clutch action. I think maybe clutch slave or mater cyl went out or pressure plate but there was spring pressure though it felt different.

I think ok 2 miles home.. I have driven with no clutch.. get rolling in 2nd. Then see smoke and smell gear oil burning. stop to check it out and gear oil is pouring out of the bottom of the bell housing. Limp home the last 1/4 mile. Now I see pieces of the bell housing near the shift linkage and upon further inspection I see a hole at about 11 oclock (if standing on the left side of the engine bay.

It seems to me what has occurred is something on the clutch pressure plate came loose (bolt, spring etc) and cracked the gear housing allowing all my fluid to hit the ground.

The clutch felt strong when I bought the car in January. Suspect someone may have done a clutch that did not know what they were doing.

Either way there are a few cars in the local pull your part and can get a used unit for $100. I am on a very tight budget. What cars have compatible gear boxes and will work on a 1999 9-3. I see that the older 900's dont have hydraulic clutch.
Also I will replace a few parts on the replacement unit like the drive shaft bearings etc. I really would like to go through the unit and check it before installing.

If anyone knows of a good unit somewhere let me know.. plus like to hear thoughts
