Hi:
I replaced the right outer tie rod end on my 1999 base coup 9-3 on Monday. Defore taking off the old one I counted 6 threads exposed on the rod. A mechanic friend actually removed the old one and screwed on the new one, saying he counted how many turns and replaced the new one at the same # of turns. I only coounted 5 exposed threads after he put it ono, but since he is a mechanic I decided to trust him. I put on the nut and tightened it but the tie rod end didn't seem to pull as far in as the original, but the nut started turning without pulling it in further so I stopped. I put the wheel back on and measured between the front and back edges of the rims and it seemed the same. However, the steering wheel is now cocked slightly to the left when driving straight ahead. I took the car to the local garage to get the alignment and install checked, and they said it was installed okay but they couldn't do the alignment because the right side coil spring was broken and that side was a bit lower than the left. Here are my questions:
1. Is the alignment out now?
2. Should I knock the tie rod end back out, unscrew it one turn and re-install? Will this straighten out the steering wheel wheel?
3. Is the tie rod end supposed to seat fully soley by tightening the nut?
4. Can at least a basic alignment (toe-in, I think) be done even if one side is lower?
Sorry for the long post but I wanted to put down all the info. The car has almost 377000 KM and I just spent $628 CDN to replace the two front power steering hoses and can't afford another large bill (e.g. new springs/struts)
Any help much appreciated.
Fred
