As you said, "a lot of oil up in the engine that won't come out unless you drain it for hours, and life's too short"
Draining overnight takes me LESS time than waiting 20 mins for the oil to drain. I pull the plug, and walk away leaving it overnight, then finish up in the morning. 5 minute job, whereas your strategy takes at 25 minutes or more; and I get a better drain.
It all depends whether you are fastidious (or anal like me) about maintenance, or satisfied going to Jiffy Lube. There are increasing number of posts here of people neglecting to do preventative maintenance (like changing coolant hoses) and either being stranded, and/or suffering catastrophic engine failure due to over heating and the like.
I was just sharing my methodology, having admitted many times on my posts that I'm anal about maintenance (primarily preventative). Do as you please. I don't really care.
