I would go back and look at the instructions and do it as Dmitry described. To me it wouldn't make sense to deactivate the tape player. My concern would be never being able to switch back to the radio or line-in. And then being just stuck with one.
Or... Couldn't you just use a cassette shell so that the deck senses a tape and when you switch to radio it just ejects the shell. With just the shell of the tape it wouldn't be able to play anything..
