Defiitely true about the synthetic "cleaning up" the gunk that is sealing your seals. I know some mechanics will say "Synthetic will neve make a good seal leak". That's true, but if my bad seals were holding it together and I put synthetic in and then it starts to leak... well...
That said, some cars go their whole life an never leak. Some start leaking at 50K. There doesn't seem to be any pattern. Switching increases the odds of a leak, but it may or may not happen. I don't worry about switching cars below 50K, above that, I'd need a good reason (like a turbo).
