I checked the EPC for part numbers, and the chassis for the seats in the '97 differ from the part number for the 98+. What needs to be considered too (I'm sure you've considered this) is that the 5D front seats don't fold forward like the 3D for rear access. This isn't to say that the seats aren't swoppable, for if the bolt pattern fastening the seat to the chassis are the same, it might be possible. I can't see them changing the spacing on the chassis to accomodate a new spacing... that would be an expensive to retool.
I'd measure the distances between the fastening bolts front to back, side to side, and compare.
Skinning the seats and transfering the leather across "isn't" an option unless you transfer the foam too, as the 97 skins are different to the 98+. The reason I know this is because I had new skins made by saabstuff, and they shipped me skins that would fit my wife's '99 9-3 (I loved the pocket on the front of the seats!) but were too big for the '95 seats I have.
If you are getting the seats from a wrecker, perhaps ask them what the return policy is?
