CEL: Camshaft Position Sensor

The '99 9-3SE I bought a year ago had a CEL when we got it, indicating the Camshaft Position Sensor was bad. Of course, there is no such sensor on the car.
The indy who worked on the car its whole life (who happens to also be my #1 indy) said the DI was probably heading south. So I put on the spare DI from my 9K and the light goes out.
Now, a year and 7K miles later I'm getting the same CEL code (3304, I think). Not much of a surprise, given that the DI on there probably has at least 100K miles on it.
SO...
does anyone have an idea of how long I have before this is a real problem, and is there any real consensus of whether the less expensive black DI cassettes will work OK on a '99 9-3? Or do I have to spring for the $390 red one? Or maybe I should just get a used one. Don't want the kid to be stranded someplace, which, since I travel often, would naturally happen when I'm in a different time zone.
Thoughts?
