Inside your torque converter there is a disk that can be pressed against the shell to lock the converter input and output so that it is a direct connection rather than a fluid coupling. The disk moves on a shaft and can bind in the fully engaged position or may be partially engaged causing the engine to labor. It could feel like starting out in 2nd or 3rd gear with a manual transmission. If they get stuck in the fully engaged position, the car will stall at stops like forgetting to depress the clutch pedal on a manual. GM had a problem with this some years ago, but they would get stuck when hot. The car would stall coming to a stop off a freeway ramp and then they would unstick themselves when the oil pressure in the gearbox dropped.
