Ignition switch replaced now light problem

I just replaced the ignition switch on my 1997 SAAB 900 convertible since the previous one lost the spring return. Now when I turn the ignition off and withdraw the key the headlamps stay on for about 1 minute but the interior lights do not come. If I then insert the key, turn the ignition switch to the ON position and then OFF (without starting the engine) and remove the key, the headlamps stay off and the interior lights come on. Interior lights function OK by toggling the interior light switch. The key lock cyclinder seems to be spring out when the key is removed. Replacement part was a genuine SAAB part. Anyone seen this behaviour before or have any pointers to what might be the cause?
