New Noise - Sounds Troubling

Have a '01 9-3 SE Turbo with 94k. The car is not driven much - maybe once per week for short distances. Upon start up last night I heard what sounded like a metalic pinging or bang under the hood. The noise is there when the vehicle is stopped and idling and it is there upon driving and acceleration. It is inconsistent but does increase in frequency upon acceleration whether the car is moving or not.
When looking at the engine from the left side (drive belt side) it sounds like it's coming from the upper left part of the engine - almost where the back cam shaft would be. At first I thought it was the belt tensioner but that looked okay and the car seems to be running fine. The noise sounds louder at idle then under acceleration but that might just be because the engine noises are overall louder under acceleration. I checked the oil level and it was fine. I have never had an engine fail catastrophically but would assume it happens fast and without warning. Have also heard of something called "piston slap" but unsure what that is.
So - any ideas/thoughts on what I should be looking at?
