The problem with manual operation, where you release the so called "emergency" release behind the rear seatback is that you will not be able to close the gap between the body and the rear window "fifth bow" bottom and you will have a non-weather tight car with a one or two inch gap there whenever the top is up.This is the last bit of the top sequencing when you are raising your top electrically. If you are in Arizona maybe you can live with it.
The cost for a rebuilt motor/gearbox assembly can be brought down considerably from $2K but finding someone who knows these systems can be a problem, if you are in CT I could take a look,
Good luck,
John
