Hello all, I have a 2000 9-3 base with 160,000kms on it. Lately, I have been noticing a strange noise when I start the engine after the car has been sitting for a while i.e. cold engine.

A few seconds after ignition, the boost gauge moves up from about 25% white (normal idle position) to about 75% white (i.e. less vacuum), and a sound like a "woooooooOOOO" (sounds very much like a vacuum cleaner) can be heard coming from the engine, increasing in pitch, even though the engine is just idling at a steady RPM. If I rev the engine slightly during this period, the sound decreases in pitch and the boost gauge moves back down the white zone. After about one minute, the sound disappears, and the boost gauge returns to normal.

Also, as I accelerate (in any gear), a higher-pitch noise can be heard, increasing in pitch but not in time with the engine RPMs, but it is soon drowned out by the normal engine sound. At the moment I'm assuming that the two conditions are related.

I don't think the noise is the idler pulley as it and the tensioner were replaced in January. I had a new turbo installed in June, and the water pump was replaced in August. I did find a few vacuum hoses that were disconnected, and replaced those with new hoses, but the noise is still there.

I tried to isolate the sound at idle with a stethoscope and it's definitely somewhere in the turbo system. Could one of the intercooler/downpipe/intake pipe connections have come loose? Would that account for the sound heard at idle and on acceleration?

The car idles smoothly and runs great, with plenty of power and boost, but the sound that I'm hearing is just driving me nuts. My mechanic wants me to leave the car with him all day so that he can diagnose this but it's our family car so it's hard to leave it with him for that long.

Has anyone on this board experienced anything like this?

Thanks for reading,

Miguel
