A 9.3 issue prior to 2003 - crush sleeve

The added HP and namely torque in the Viggen shows up in transmissions particularly if the driver isn't careful and lets the wheels spin or worse, hop!
Then there's the crush sleeve which tends to fail. It's failure can destroy the transmission. As I understand it the crush sleeve preloads the primary shaft's support bearing. When the sleeve snaps it falls into the transmission and damage gears debris of which will cause more damage. The shaft also becomes loose which affects how the gears mesh. In 2003 a redesigned crush sleeve was introduced.
I learned all about the crush sleeve when my 2002 Viggen ate the tranny. No wheel spin, no hop, just some aggressive acceleration on a highway onramp but with a Stage 4 tune.
On a happy note, I chose a brand new in the box 9.3 tranny (not Viggen) which is identical to the Viggen's with the exception of the output drivers and the differential, the latter of which I replaced with a Quaife LSD....much cheaper than opting for a Viggen tranny! Besides I love my Viggen too much.
If you don't want to get a new transmission, you can use any 9.3 which might be a safer bet (less power) if you swap in your differential and output drivers. To install the differential a new crush sleeve will be required, just make sure it's the new design.
For more info on transmissions check the Genuine Saab website. There are photos of the old and new designed crush sleeve as well as other means for reinforcing the transmission for modified high powered Viggens.
Let us know what you do and how it works out....best of luck!
