I solved a couple of really annoying rattles on my 96 900SE convertible and thought I'd share my findings and solutions with the tribe. The first rattle point was the linkages in the top above my left ear (driver). This linkage folds the second bow and was a constant rattle point and was really a big pain. Here's what I found and fixed. All of the linkage points looked like they at one time had bushings, but they basically disintegrated and fell apart. This left a shoulder screw in a much too large a hole...causing the rattle. I gained access to this by stopping the top about halfway in the fold process. Not having access to the replacement bushings, I improvised a solution. I went to the local hobby shop and obtained a 3 inch length of "Large Silicon Fuel Tubingâ The guy there gave it to me free as it was otherwise scrap. I cut sections of tubing that were about a 1/16" longer than the shoulder on the screws. This tubing filled the holes in the brackets and also because it was a little longer than the shoulder, it squished out on both sides of the bracket and completely isolated the metal to metal contact. The problem is solved, took 10mins and cost nothing.

The second rattle point was coming from the rear suspension when going over bumps. I had recently replaced the stock Saab shocks with after market KYB units and apparently the mounting section of this is about 1/4" longer than stock...when mounted they didn't compress the rubber shock mounts enough. When going over a bump, the bottom mount would compress and allow the washer on the top to become loose and rattle. The fix was extremely simple in that I used about 1/4" worth of washers between the top mount and mounting nut. This compressed the rubber mounts, preventing the rattle...completely fixed, and basically free.

My SAAB rattles are fixed in one afternoon and no real expense....it was a good SAAB day!
