Shift linkage ball joint popping off

For the second time in a few hundred miles the black plastic connector that attaches to the small brass ball joint on my car has popped off (leaving me unable to shift). I'm able to snap it back on with pliers (and it clicks into place nicely and seems to be fine) and drive around normally after reconnecting it.
Is that black plastic piece replaceable?
Both times this has become disconnected it has been after a friend drives the car. Could their shifting technique be causing the issue?
Thanks!
