radiator drain plug leak, broken plug, new plug leaks Posted by Viggen Aero [Email] (#977) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Viggen Aero) on Tue, 30 Nov 2010 16:05:44 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
02 Viggen. Drained coolant through drain plug. It was easy to get plug out and back in. It was only slighly more than hand tight when removed. But I tightened it too much and broke plug. I was able to get the plug out easily with a T30 Tork.
Bought new plug today. It came with an O-ring, which the old one didn't have. The SAAB parts said the O-ring was not installed at the factory- this was an update. And there is not an O-ring on my 01 Viggen either.
Maybe I am now scared to overtighten. I installed and tightend- but I could not get the plug to seal. Since it is a hollow plug, it must seal on the inside of the radiator at the pointed end of the plug, and not the outside of plug where it contacts radiator.
I tried it with and without the O-ring. And even tried it in another radiator from my O1 Viggen- to rule out any problem with my 02 radiator. Could not seal in either car.
Is their a trick to this- or am I just not tightening it enough? It sure seems tight enough. Should I uses the O-ring.
