Releasing stuck/frozen e-brake cable Posted by NCCaniac [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Earlier this week I ran into the problem again where some water must have got in to the sheath of the emergency brake cable while driving and then it froze while my car was parked for a couple of hours after sunset. (This is on my 2000 9-3 hatch.) I was parked with the front end against a curb, so I could not (easily) drive forward.
I had read here before that you should be able to free the cable by reaching behind the rear wheel and pulling on the cable. I couldn't get it to move, but I wasn't sure if I should pull toward the front of the car or toward the rear (toward the wheel). Seems like it should be toward the front, but it did not budge. It also seemed very tight to get my hand in there through an opening to reach the cable. (I was reaching behind the wheel from up and under the front edge of the wheel well.)
As it turned out, I was able to free it enough to back up a few feet by rocking the car a few times, and once I could drive forward, it eventually released completely. So, for now I have been avoiding using the e-brake if it is below freezing, but in case this happens again, was there a better way to free the cable? Is it expensive/complex to have the e-brake cable replaced? Any other options?
