I can't speak about a Volvo 850, but I bought a 2000 9-3 new and I have been very happy with it and it is at 170,000 miles now. Yes, some things have had to be replaced, but over that many miles, that is not surprising. But then I have always taken very good care of it with regular oil changes with synthetic oil, the service at the normal intervals, etc.
I have also saved a lot of money by getting help diagnosing issues on this board so I am well informed on if it is something I can fix myself or whether it should go in to my indy Saab mechanic. Last year the ABS control unit went out and a new one would have been a very expensive repair, but via this board I learned that the unit can be sent in to one of several companies that will rebuild/repair it and send it back in a couple of days. I removed the unit, sent it in, and re-installed it myself...all for about $200+. If you are handy with standard tools, there are many things that can be replace/repaired on a Saab 9-3 without too much difficulty (I tend to draw the line at anything that requires special tools, the Tech II diagnostic/programming tool, or needs to go up on a lift).
If the 2000 you bought has bee well maintained in the past, and if you maintain it well, it should be reliable. When something comes up, you can find a wealth of information here.
