NG900 (1994-1998) and OG 9-3 (1999-2002) use an electronically-controlled 4-speed automatic transmissions with sport, normal and winter shift modes.
In normal usage with the vehicle in D (drive) the transmission will shift through all 4 gears depending on vehicle speed and engine load. Placing the selector lever in 3, 2, or 1 limits the top gear to the gear selected. This is useful when descending a long hill (think steep mountain road) to allow the engine to help control the descent speed instead of having to constantly use the brakes and possibly causing the brakes to overheat.
Pressing the S (Sport) button of the selector lever engages the Sport Mode. The shift points of the automatic transmission are changed to allow higher engine RPMs in each gear before shifting. This provides quicker acceleration and a more sporty driving style.
Pressing the W (Winter) button next to the selector lever engages Winter Mode. The vehicle starts in third gear to ensure a smooth take-off on icy surfaces, and to help minimize wheel spin.
