Replacing a 5-speed is a DIY project if you are good with tools, and have another vehicle to use while changing the 5-speed.
I replaced the 5-speed in my '97 a few years ago with a low mileage (60-k miles) transmission that I bought online for $500. I bought a transmission jack from Harbor Freight For $100 and a set of metric 6-point deep-well impact sockets to loosen the subframe. I built an engine support stand out of 4x4s, 1/2" threaded rod and a couple chains. It took me around 20 hours total to replace it, but I was in no rush. I've been retired since 2001 and have plenty of time on my hands, as well as the tools and heated garage to do the work in.
I realize that you are in Canada, but the only things different would be the local prices. If you decide to DIY, checkout Dmitri's site: platonoff.com... Ron
