Clutch or gearbox wirring when cold?

Hello
Car is a 2003 9-3 low pressure turbo stick shift with approx. 150.000km on the clock.
Recently my car started making a whirring noise when rolling cold. Its fairly high pitched and very characteristic of teeth not meshing properly. Its audible both in- and outside when moving between 0 and 30 km/h, above that threshold I don't hear it/won't push it in fear of further damage. As the engine heats up the noise gradually disappears, usually within minutes.
Using the clutch and gearshift I've eliminated the engine and gearbox from the issue, it seems to be anything from the wheel bearings to the diferrential/clutch assembly - i.e. the noise is still there when the car is rolled down a slope in neutral. The shifter and clutch operate as normal, however: When shifting to reverse I must always stop before engaging the reverse, otherwise the gears will grind. This is pretty standard but I don't know if its new to my car - I don't usually mistreat my shifter that way.
My local Saab shop thinks it may be the clutch but want to listen to it. A mechanic I know says he'd change the gear oil first, although the Saab shop says this is never changed on a stick shift.
I'd really appreciate you guys' input on this subject, before I decide what to do next. I want to drive it as little as possible until I find the right course of action, friction in the gearbox could become a major expense...
Thanks in advance,
JiSC
