Chain Snap-Balance?

Last night heading home from work heard rough sound coming from engine, almost like grinding brake sound. Just as pulled into garage heard metal flying around in engine. Stopped immediately and found metal fragments that look like the tiny cylinders that would hold links together in the serpentine belt pulleys. Is that the balance chain that went?
Thanks
