YES, the spring absolutely needed.
Try to find some thin/stiff plastic stuff that can be wrapped into a circle and placed over the crank and let the seal ride on that so that the lip gets over the crank.
Be very careful and use a big flat surface to knock the seal in so you don't dent it all over using a hammer.
