The only place where I think it could have caused a problem is around the oil pump pulley. (You didn't mention what year and model)
See link. It is the crankshaft pulley, behind which is the oil pump. The belt would have had to wedge itself between the pulley in the picture and the aluminum oil pump housing. Is this what the mechanic is saying?
