I have a 2000 9-3 and had ABS light issues about 18 months ago. It could be either the speed sensor is gummed up with road grime (I think it is on left rear wheel on the passenger side) or it could be the ABS control unit is starting to fail. When the light comes on, does the speedometer go dead? If it is the ABS control unit, that is VERY expensive to have replaced new, but only a couple of hundred dollars to have repaired.
Apparently the common failure is a solder joint cracks in the controller, or something like that. I had mine repaired by BBA Remanufacturing (search this board for BBA). The repair plus FedEx overnight shipping each way was around $200 or so. That was with me removing and reinstalling the part myself.
To be sure what is going on, codes should have been logged when the ABS light comes on. A Saab mechanic with the Tech II can check the codes and identify the culprit.
