Where you connect the two heater hoses under the car, those two pipes goes in under the heater core swings around more than 90 degree and connects to the core or plastic fittings there.
That's why you would have to replace those two pipes as well if you would try to go with the older core.
But if the whole heater housing has been updated in some ways between the two years, then you might not be able to fit the old one in there. And looking at EPC it is a whole bunch of cut off VIN numbers right around 96-97 for the whole heater box so I would leave lots of question marks if it is possible or not.
