Getting the drift, I meant I was sarcastic about the clean air comment but in reality, if car owners really knew how much money they are each paying in repairs, repairs that has absolutely no bearing in the cars performance or drivebility but is only there to keep the exhaust coming out clean, they would probably be less interested in the emission programs.
As far as a 97 900 T goes, it is at least 9 different codes (P-0441, 0442, 0443, 0444, 0445, 0452, 0453 and 0455) related to EVAP system alone and then it is other codes that the EVAP system can trigger when it malfunctions in different ways.
Just take the 99-01 9-5 as example, just like the 97 900 T it has an pressure/vacuum sensor mounted on top of the gas tank. The sole purpose of that sensor is to alert the system that there is a leak in the EVAP system when the car runs its self test.
The big irony in all this is that the mounting plate for that tank sensor cracks and it creates a leak in the system and the gas tank has to be replaced for 1000.00 + dollars (or may be repaired with aircraft fuel tank epoxy, see pic). So, if that sensor had never been installed in the first place, the car had performed just beautifully not having to have that $1000.00 repair.
