Electrical burning smell (long explanation)

I went for a top down drive in the mountains of southern Utah yesterday. When going up the mountain with the car in sport mode, I caught a whiff of what smelled like an electrical burning smell. I turned sport mode off and the smell went away. I thought it could have been the early '80s GMC Suburban in front of me because the GMC didn't sound too healthy and sport mode was a coincidence. I used engine braking in second gear (automatic) on the way down the mountain with sport mode turned off and the smell cam back stronger, but was gone before I could find a safe place to pull over and look under the hood. The car stalled once when I made a wrong turn and stopped the car and placed it in reverse to turn around (in a safe place, of course). It restarted right away. It didn't give any more problems, but I didn't drive much after that.
I actually live in Florida and this is the first time the car has been at an altitude over about 200 feet and the mountain that I was on was about 10,000 feet with the town where I am staying at 6,000 feet. I need the car to get me back to Florida in about a month.
I read here that it could be the serp belt andI think the serp belt looks ok, but I don't really know how to check. It doesn't squeal.
Thank you for any ideas and help
