It could be the reverse lockout... pull the boot up and see if is it blocking you. You might also adjust the linkage as a check.

My suspicion is that it's a different problem. All the forward gears are syncromesh, meaning that there is mechanism in there that stops the rotation of the gears when you move the shifter into the location just before you engage the gear. Reverse does not have that feature. By putting your car into a forward gear, you cause the gears to stop spinning. Then you move it to reverse and it slips in easily since the gears are now stopped. I suspect you have a reverse gear problem.
