It could have some mechanical bits out of place, or it would just need lubrication.
First, make sure the key is all the way down in the slot. Seems obvious, but be sure. Note that you CANNOT take the car out of reverse until that key moves out of the locked position (at least without some more serious labor) so do NOT try to force it
Try what the others said, clutch in, move around, jiggle left right with the shifter.
Get a fresh can of WD-40. No, it's not the world's best lock lubricant, but that's not our job here: it's cleaning and remote meachnism lubrication, Put a rag around the ignition area and spray the WD-40 into the key slot. Lots of it. Then around the edge of the mechanism that moves... the part that's about the size of a nickel. If you're lucky, the nickel sized part is popped up from removing the key. If not, that's part of the problem. Key in, key out, twist, jiggle, lube some more. Get a block of wood an LIGHTLY tap the top of the lock mechanism. It you get it to turn, operate it multiple times while you continue to lubricate.
If you're lucky, it;s just grimy. The WD 40 will loosen up the pins or other items and get things moving again.
