Any ideas for stalled alternator job? Kinda URGENT :) Posted by Nicholas [Email] (#2995) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Nicholas) on Sat, 23 Jul 2011 18:58:27 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well first thanks for all the help so far. Finally got a used Bosch alternator for my 2000 9-3 from one of the great Florida indy's here - thanks Justin!
Really dug into the job today , figured out some stuff, but unfortunately I believe I stripped both, yes, both the screw heads for the darn 8mm hex heads that hold the alternator in. Dunno if they were mangled before, but I just couldn't get enough purchase, etc. on them with both a standard hex wrench and my hex socket set.
So, now I'm in a bit of a mess. Also, I didn't understand how big the top alternator bracket actually is and how many bolts are in it. Of course, I thought I'd just unbolt both brackets and take the alternator out with the brackets attached. Even started drilling out the bottom stripped alternator bolt because I thought I had the top bracket loose :-/
So, I got out like 3-4 of the regular bolts that I found with my fingers on that big complex top bracket. I *think* I have found the last one, but it's really tough. Sandwiched between the curved side of the alternator and the engine. My old alternator has some sort of extended plastic cover and that appears where it's stuck.
So, I think with a lot of work and basically prying around that cover I might be able to get that bolt out and I hope it's the last for the top? Then, my plan is to get the alternator out the top (what could stop it?) and deal with those stripped bolts. If I didn't drill through the bottom bracket I figure I could carefully drill the heads off and get new bolts somewhere?
Well I guess that's it. Sorry for the longer story. Just trying to desribe what I got here. Thanks much for any quick help on this and any more about that top and bottom bracket. Is the bottom just the one bolt? It appears to be from some prybar action I took on it.
