You said: "When the gas level is down again, remove the hose from car and study the rubber so that it isn't cracks in the rubber going under the clamp."
It turns out there was a small "slit" in the hose connected to the tank, at the top of the hose right at the "seam". The 1/2" slit was directly behind the clamp--towards the upper portion of the hose if you get my description. Funny thing is, you couldn't see the slit or feel the slit--you actually had to remove the hose from the car and squeeze it to find the slit.
I ordered one from Eeuroparts, but that didnt' solve my immediate problem of needing a car to drive. No one sells that size fuel hose, so I "McGiver'ed" a solution! Remembering my days of fixing bicycle tire punctures, I took a 1" section of fuel injection line, slit it on o side, roughed up the inside of this patch, roughed up the slit on the leaking hose, and applied some "Seal All" to the patch and the damaged hose. I then wrapped the patch with a couple of tie wraps to keep the patch in place while the "Seal All" cured overnight.
Voila! Replaced the hose and no leak! But, I haven't filled the call to full yet, so I don't know it it would hold under those conditions (holds fine at 3/4 tank, so thats as much gas as I'll put in until the new hose arrives).
Lesson here--NEVER assume the part is good unless you remove it from the car and look at it. Don't just rely on feel!
Thanks for your time. As always, you are the best, and you'll undoubtedly see my car at some point in the next few months or so!
BTW, I'd like to replace the smaller hose at the same time but it doesn't show up at Eeuroparts or other places I've searched. Saab part number 4440244. Do you have a source and price? I'll be in your area on Saturday 7/30.
