Hi

I have a 1999 9-3 Turbo convertible 5 speed.

Recently I noticed what I thought was a clanky, rattling sound coming from perhaps my driver's side front end. I thought perhaps some brake issue but the brakes seemed fine. The sound would come and go. No particular pattern

Today, after driving 40 miles today. I came home and I got someone's mail by mistake and I drove it to their house about 1/2 mile away. Everything seemed normal. On the way back the clanky, ratting sound became a very lound ratting clanky sound and it was coming from inside my engine compartment. I pulled over and shut the car off. I couldn't open the hood. It was starting to rain. So I then tried to close my electric front windows. No power to the windows. Nothing. No radio. The car would then start without me turning the key passed the point of engagement. The loud sound was still there. I walked home. Call AAA. My wife drove me back to the car. I started it again same clanky noise (very tinny and screeching) still no power. I am now thinking starter problem?

AAA arrived. I told them what the problem was. He asked for my keys. It started - no noise. He drove it back and forth. No noise. He then shut my windows they worked fine. He then heard the noise but it lasted only about a 1/4 of a second and it wasn't very loud. I drove it home. No problems.

I decided I would wait on getting it towed to my trusty Saab garage 20 miles away. Traffic would be too bad to have it die on the highway.

So what are your thoughts about this?

I did notice a smell - can't describe it - NOT a class rubber burning electric smell.

Thanks for any thoughts you may have

I am just glad my wife heard the noise too or I would be looking for someone to check me out.
