Air is easier to suck that brake fluid!
Rule out the MC....once you're sure there's no air in the lines and it still feels spongy I'd say it's the MC. As I recall, a bad MC would not hold or create enough pressure. A spongy pedal is one way to describe it. See if you can pump up the pedal and then it slowly drops (after bleeding). I also know that when my 900's MC went there was lots of black crud/particulate in the bottom of the tank. Have you seen that? It's the piston plunger deteriorating.
