When the clutch bearing went on my 9-3's AC, it sounded a bit like a turkey gobbling. The AC stopped functioning but the pulley did not seize, fortunately, so the belt was not destroyed. An independent mechanic (not saab) wanted $1000 to replace the entire compressor. The dealer wanted more.
It cost me $35 for a new bearing, and took a few hours of time to replace.
In your case, it sounds like the clutch/pulley seized up, breaking the belt and perhaps destroying the power steering pump too?
And, yes, there is a short belt that can be used. The info has been posted here (I think I may even have posted a part #). It may or may not apply to Italy however..
Good luck with it.
