Me personally. I would not do it without lifting off the cylinder head and replacing the head gasket at the same time.
Since these engine are leaking oil from the head gasket from factory, I think that leak will get much worse trying to mate the timing cover back up against the cylinder head again.
One shop I know have even starting to use the older fiber head gasket instead of the sheet metal to stem the oil leaks. I might try that myself next time I do a head gasket.
Are you planning to disable balance shafts (or by the gear set kit)? Keep in mind that if the engine has had low oil pressure for awhile, the balance shaft bearings might be shot and you will have low oil pressure after all is said and done anyway.
When I used to do the balance gears on the older 900 engines I had to push the engine over using a small bottleneck jack between bell housing and sub frame.
