2 months ago, local mechanic did an oil change with Dino oil instead of high-mileage semi=synthetic I'd been using for 3 years (just forgot when went to different guy). Got oil out the main oil pump seal and replaced that. Warm all summer, no other problems.
2-3 weeks ago, started noticing a decent amount of white smoke on startup (can actually see in side mirror backing out of driveway, not noticable before). This coincided with cooler mornings (40's F instead of 70) so haven't thought much of it.
Last weekend, I got to pull the FMIC to replace the PS line under the radiator...and found quite a bit of oil in the IC pipes. Last night I got to pull the IC pipe to the engine (the 'upper' IC hose) again, since I apparently didn't get the PS connection under the battery tight enough the first time. Here's where things got interesting.
I pull off the pipe, and I notice more oil in it than 100 miles/3 days earlier. So much more, that at the bend as it goes up from the IC to the intake pipe before the throttle-body (sorry, realize I'm probably butchering terminology) there is a PUDDLE in the pipe. Probably 1/4 of an ounce. Letting the pipe sit to drain while working on other things (propped-up) it made a puddle the size of a nickel and that didn't get it all out.
Oil level not noticably changed on dipstick, I'm watching that.
Guessing this is the oil seal in the Turbo, and planning to purchase/replace from a boneyard.
No CEL or codes yet.
My question where I could really use help from those with prior experience - what else should I be watching for to make sure I don't kill the whole car? Is the MAF at risk due to oil blowby? There other things I should be watching for to avoid a catastrophic failure?
Turbo still spools up fine, am I at imminent risk of near-term full turbo failure, and should I park it, or do I have a few weeks until part comes in and I have time to replace?
Would an oil change to higher weight and high-mileage synthetic plug this back up, and eliminate need for turbo swap at all? (wishful thinking)
