power steering leaks and noises

Replaced the p/s pump and return hose from firewall to reservoir with generic 3/8" inside diameter p/s hose from NAPA. Can't seem to get the hose to go over the connector at the reservoir (lubricating the connector with p/s fluid didn't help either). Could only get a portion of the hose to go over, not enough to put a hose clamp on. Ended up cutting up portion of the old one and splice it to the new one to use temporarily.
Purged the system but there are still noises when turning the wheels. Noticed that during the reinstall of the hoses (at the reservoir), the hose from the reservoir to the pump can be twisted and turn freely where the rubber part meets the metal. Is that normal for the hose to be able to turn like that? Do I need to replace that hose as well? It's rather expensive.
Any idea on how I can just replace that section (the rubber hose from the reservoir to the metal? Or do I just have to bite the bullet and replace it? I am guessing that the looseness allows air to enter the system, hence the noises I hear when turning the wheels. Checked the high pressure hoses and they seems to be okay; no rusties.
